A US Black Hawk helicopter comes into land at Forward Operating Base Budwan, Afghanistan, during a CASEVAC (emergency casualty evacuation) at one of the artillery positions for Australian gunners attached to Operation Herrick XIII.
This photograph was taken in 2011 by Nick Fletcher, the Memorial’s Head of Military Heraldry and Technology. Fletcher travelled to Afghanistan with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in 2009, and again in 2011, as part of the Memorial’s Curators in the Field program. This program continues the Memorial’s tradition of documenting the Australian experience at war by collecting records, photographs, oral histories, and objects for the National Collection.
