Conformateur

German Hat Museum

German Hat Museum
Lindenberg, Germany

The hat maker can take a precise measurement of the customer's head circumference using a conformateur. Developed in 1852, it is made of wood and 48 individual moving parts which are all linked to one another. The linked parts are pushed outward as the conformateur is positioned. The shape of the head can then be reduced, punched onto a paper card, and cut out using a device.
