Since the 16th century this type of conical cups have also been known as the Russian hats (Kreewes-Zepper), which derives from the cup's resemblance to the headgear of Russian merchants. These cups usually have a smooth surface, embedded inscriptions, coats of arms and other elements on a gilded background. The cup is decorated with von Nolcken coat of arms. Von Nolcken was an old family of German chivalry in Sweden and Rzeczpospolita, its German-Baltic branch also spread to Livonia, and later to the Baltic provinces of the Russian Empire. Representatives of the family in the territory of Livonia held land marshals, governors, colonels and other important positions.
