Conservation of Józef Chełmoński's painting Czwórka. Fragment of the painting during conservation: cracks and dirt on the paint layer

The painting also exhibits wrinkles in the paint layer and so-called early drying cracks, exposing the underlying layer. These are the result of the artist's working method of applying paint heavily diluted with binder to an undried underpainting, causing intensive shrinkage.
