The restoration work was accompanied by research into the painting, which identified the materials used by the artist and enabled the creative process to be traced. X-rays highlighted the author's compositional changes, mainly concerning the horse-drawn cart. Chełmoński toned down somewhat the dynamics of the arrangement of the horses' bodies, originally almost flying above the ground. The solution ultimately adopted is more natural and the scene depicted more freely without losing the power of artistic expression.
