Coolac meteorite

Geoscience Australia

Geoscience Australia
Symonston, Australia

This iron meteorite is part of a mass of 19.3kg found in 1874 about 5km west of Coolac in New South Wales and was used as a firestop in an open fireplace in the home of its finder, Mr Thomas McMahon of Coolac, until it was recognised as a meteorite in 1937. It is an iron meteorite and the large polished slice here shows the crosshatched pattern of the Widmanstatten structure.
