Coronation of Our Lady with Saints

Museo Diocesano Tridentino
Trento, Italy

The altarpiece was commissioned by Count Oswald II Trapp for the family altar located in the cathedral of Trento. The composition is divided into two bands: in the top band there is the theme regarding the coronation of the Holy Virgin by the Trinity, while in the bottom band there is the depiction, to the sides, of the four saints protectors of the Trapp family: Ursula, Oswald King of Northumbria, James the Great and Dorothea. At the center the more important figure is Vigilius, patron saint of the diocese of Trento, and the figures of the Anaunia Martyrs, Sisinnius, Martyrius and Alexander. More than its formal quality, the true virtue of the painting lies essentially in its devotional and symbolical value: the majestic figure of Saint Vigilius, flanked by the Anaunia Martyrs, is a celebration of the Church of Trento.
