Canudos was destroyed until no building was left standing. After the final conflict, the city was set on fire and many of its inhabitants were burned to death. Despite avoiding the most embarrassing scenes of the war, Flávio de Barros recorded this impressive image in which it is possible to see some bodies on the floor, mixed with the ashes of the woodwork of the burned houses. The scene was repeated throughout the entire length of the camp.
