Sha Menghai used to be the students of Feng Junmu and Wu Changshuo, studying classic poetry and calligraphy respectively. His calligraphy was influenced by styles of Han dynasty and Wei dynasty, and he also absorbed the calligraphy of later Song dynasty, Ming dynasty, and Qing dynasty, integrating the features of Zhong You, Wang Xizhi, Ou Yangxun, Yan Zhenqing, Huang Tingjian, Kang Youwei, Wu Changshuo into his own, powerful style. He developed the calligraphy style of the Northern Wei Dynasty and became the new representative. Sha plays an important role in calligraphy history in styles of Seal Script, clerical script, regular script and cursive script, especially running script and cursive script. He also had full knowledge of linguistics, literature, history, archaeology and inscription.
