A satyr and a maenad are playing instruments, putti are dancing, a boy is riding a goat, one putto is asleep. This bacchanal scene is one of the masterpieces of Baroque Glass engraving. The motif is engraved deeply into the thick Glass, yet composed in such a way that the outlines do not look jagged when a viewer considers the main angles. The lapidary and Glass engraver Gottfried Spiller moved to Berlin from Silesia in 1683 and is known to have been there until 1721. The beaker demonstrates a change in Glass quality during the Baroque period. Glassmakers succeeded in perfecting the colourlessness and clarity of Glass so that it can hardly be differentiated from rock crystal. However, the process required to purify the raw materials removed components essential for a stable composition, a fact that was not known at the time. The Glass reacts sensitively to ambient climatic conditions, and hairline cracks appear. (Dedo von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk)
