James Hadley, designer of this Renaissance-revival style vase, was one of the top designers of the English Royal Worcester Porcelain Company. The Fricks favored high-quality British porcelain, and a number of Royal Worcester pieces are in the collection. The Renaissance-revival style was popular in the late 19th century, inspired by a number of art histories on the Renaissance published at that time. The painting on the vase by a Royal Worcester artist is classically studied and balanced, but rendered with Victorian color and flourish.
