Cecilia Lamptey-Botchway (b. 1992, Ghanaian/ Nigerian) is an artist whose practice ranges from performance, textile design, painting to multi-media work. She graduated from the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba School of Art, Design, and Textiles in 2015.
In her recent works, Cecilia experiments with colour, incorporating and deriving meaning from symbols from cloth stamping and batik tradition, found objects and other materials like mopping wool. Cecilia almost creates a unique language with which she communicates her passions. She employs an intricate sense of geometry, a delicate perspective to achieve symmetry with colours, with the mixed media adding vibrant dimensions as props to her paintings.
‘The painting “Covering my back” is inspired by my notion of protection and sisterhood. I have always had someone to ‘cover my back’ against my indiscretions as kid. My mum, aunts and elderly women within my family provided that support and in turn, I also provide that support to my younger sister. Don’t we all need someone to ‘cover our backs’ against indiscretions as kids?’
