This wooden cross, wrapped in red fabric was used in official Independent Order of St. Luke ceremonies. The IOSL, as it was known for short, was not exclusively affiliated with one denomination though it was a Christian organization that adopted many religious symbols. Often, churches of varying Protestant sects charted IOSL councils. Maggie Walker first joined her local council through Richmond's First African Baptist Church.
