The image of Christ crucified is a symbolic scene because it evokes sacrifice, redemption and salvation of human beings. The Hispanic-Filipino ivory sculptures arrived in Peru through the transpacific route from the East Indies of the Spanish Empire. The craftsmen’s skills can be seen in the detailed carving of this soft textured ivory, featuring an Expiring Christ.
