Crystallography laboratory at Birkbeck

This photograph shows a scientist using an electron microscope in the crystallography lab at Birkbeck. These high powered microscopes now do a lot of work that was previously done by X-ray diffraction. They are large, expensive pieces of equipment, generally standing alone in a small, specially designed room and requiring trained personnel to operate them.
