In 1956 Fred and Eileen Whitaker traveled throughout Europe, sketching and taking two-and three-dimensional (for spatial depth) photos that served as inspiration for later paintings. Eileen particularly loved Spain, its people, and its architecture. She completed this painting in their “cellar studio” after they had moved to La Jolla, California, in 1965, and before they built a more spacious freestanding studio adjacent to their home. The painting won awards at a competitive exhibition at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco and at an American Watercolor Society annual exhibition.
