Albert Dov Sigal sailed from Burgas, Bulgaria, on an illegal immigrant ship on December 27, 1947, intending to reach Palestine. The boat was intercepted by the British, who detained the passengers in Cyprus. Sigal based his prints on drawings he made in the Cyprus internment camp. The British released the family on February 22, 1948, and allowed them to enter Palestine because they were traveling with their young son. They eventually left what became the State of Israel and resettled in New York in 1959.
