Daehan Hwabo newspaper (June 1, 1953 issue)

The Daehan Hwabo newspaper was created by the Bureau of Public Information immediately after the Republic of Korea was established, and was designed to promote the government to the public. This is the June 1, 1953 issue of the Daehan Hwabo newspaper. It includes four photographs of citizens holding large anti-armistice demonstrations. On July 27 of the same year, Mark Wayne Clark (1896–1984), commander of the UN forces; Kim Il Sung (1912–94), commander of the North Korean military; and Peng Dehuai (1898–1974), commanding officer of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, signed the Armistice Agreement in Panmunjom, ending the Korean War. However, President Syngman Rhee opposed the US government's push for the Armistice Agreement. The bottom of the newspaper includes the phrase, "Unification or death: citizens' rally for unification by northward advance (Capitol Plaza)."
