Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan with the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

This photograph shows Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan, Professor of Botany at Birkbeck College, with Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, around 1940. Gwynne-Vaughan is pictured wearing her military uniform as Chief Controller of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She held this post from 1939-41 during the Second World War, having received the honour of Dame of the British Empire for her service during the First World War.
