Mount's Dance of the Haymakers is a joyous celebration of country life and community. Music and dance had remained active forces in Mount's life, and the artist frequently attended concerts and dances as well as playing the violin himself. Here, the two dancers are celebrating the end of the harvest by having a dance competition that measures both skill and stamina. They are being encouraged by the others in attendance to continue dancing.
