Description: The prominence and position of the imposing set décor seen in Dancer derive directly from compositions Edgar Degas developed in his series of fans between 1878 and 1880. However, in contrast to his mentor, who covered certain fans with gold and silver dust, Forain does not seek any decorative effect. Instead, he concentrates on graphic impact, using only black ink sparingly highlighted with blue wash.
Provenance: Museum purchase with funds provided by Brenda and Lester Crain, Hyde Family Foundations, Irene and Joe Orgill and the Rose Family Foundation
