Daniel Toroitch Arap Moi, popularly known to Kenyans as “Nyayo”, a Kiswahili word for “footsteps”, a word he himself was often heard saying - that he was following in the footsteps of the first President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. Moi became the country’s second President in 1978 following the death of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
