French President General Charles de Gaulle (1890 - 1970) makes a nationwide television broadcast, 23rd April 1961. Wearing his wartime brigadier's uniform he condemned the recent attempted coup by French generals in Algeria and announced that he would exercise his full powers under article 16 of the Constitution, putting him in absolute personal control of the French state.
