In the 1990s Australia, like other western countries closed down many of the large institutions for the disabled and established smaller community based housing that aimed to allow disabled people to live their lives more integrated with the rest of society.

Many people found freedom, attended universities, formed intimate relationships, got politicised and formed a range of grass roots organizations that were led by people with disabilities.
