Completed right after the artist's arrival in Rome where the patron of this work, banker Agostino Chigi, had invited him, the imagery shows evident influences from antiquity, Michelangelo and Raphael. In the scene of Venice, St. Mark's bell tower is depicted without a spire, which was added in 1514. Previously belonging to Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici (1617-1675), it reached the Uffizi in 1798.
