Philadelphia, PA, United States

Although the original, signed Declaration of Sentiments has been lost to history, this rare 1848 printing captures the demands put forth at the first women’s rights convention at Seneca Falls. Early advocates invoked the memory of the American Revolution—including the Declaration of Independence—to challenge their oppression and lack of representation in the government.
