Maiandros, the Greek name of the Meander (a river in the Milet plain in Asia Minor and called »Büyük Menderes« today in Turkish), became the synonym of endlessly winding ornamental bands that have been known ever since 10,000 BCE and spread all over Europe and beyond in a multitude of variants.
