The author numbered and signed the copy as no. 11, on page [4]. Gilberto Freyre was a sociologist, anthropologist and professor. From 1926 to 1930 he held the position of secretary to the governor of Pernambuco. In 1930 he leaves the country because of the Revolution, going to teach in the United States in 1932. He returned to Brazil in 1933, when he concluded and published his book Casa Grande & Senzala. The year 1937 – the date of the author’s dedication to Vargas – marks the beginning of the dictatorial period of the Estado Novo and also the year in which Gilberto Freyre assumes the position of technical consultant for the National Heritage as a specialist in Fine Arts, a position he held until 1957. .
