Delaware Water Gap

“Grunewald, in the manner of his teacher Friedrich, made strenuous trips into very rugged country in search of subject matter. He traveled to Niagara Falls, to various locations in northeastern Pennsylvania, to the Catskill Mountains in New York State, and even to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Closer to home, the phenomenal geological formation known as the Delaware Water Gap was only a potential tourist attraction at the time Grunewald discovered it in 1835 . . . Until the arrival of the railroad from New York in the 1850s, when recreational tourism began in earnest, the Delaware Water Gap could be reached by a rugged stagecoach ride along the Delaware. Grunewald painted the scene repeatedly as a sublime phenomenon of nature comparable to Niagara Falls.”
