Description: Design for the Sweater of the Baroness Dorotea Ritter von Pagassi for the Collection of Said Baroness of Innsbruck, Austria, includes multiple sculptural hands extending from the sides of the frame that bring to mind images of Hindu deity Shiva. The repetitive ornamental patterns of the painting are reminiscent of both Pre-Colombian textiles and mandalas, images employed by Tantric Buddhists for meditation. The title of the work is ironic in its ambiguous reference to an unidentified woman, presumably an Austrian noble alive between the eighteenth and nineteenth century whom the artist obviously never met. Friedeberg’s approach is informed by the humor and mockery of Dada, and his general attitude towards traditional notions of art is one of derision. -Text by Francesca Giani
