The "Design: Vignelli" exhibition opened in 2010 at the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, which is also home to their entire professional archives. The exhibition mirrors the "Design: Vignelli" exhibition which toured nine countries between 1989-1993. As with the previous iteration, Lella Vignelli and Massimo Vignelli designed the displays, wrote the descriptive text, and curated the artifacts for the exhibition. It is the last exhibition designed by the Vignellis that is still open to the public. Pictured: Knoll International tabloids (1976) and IAUS Skyline Newspaper (1978)

Knoll International
Graphic Program, 1966-1980
Starting in 1966 and for many years thereafter, we designed the printed matter for Knoll International, the outstanding furniture company. The catalogue, price lists, and brochures set a new standard for the furniture industry worldwide, and projected the image of design awareness that the company desired. In the early 1970s, we designed the four-color process tabloids on newsprint, which opened the way to a better-designed newspaper format. The consistently high-quality level of photography, copy, and printing set a precedent that has been rarely matched by other firms. Designing for Knoll was a most exciting and rewarding experience for us all because of their total design commitment.

Skyline New York 1878
Since 1978, “Skyline,” the “New York Architecture and Design Calendar,” has been published by the dynamic Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, an organization that has put New York back on the world’s architectural map. The central spread of the tabloid is the calendar, while preceding and following pages contain essays, reviews, and previews of events. The graphic structure is three columns, with eight modules per column. The type is Century Expanded for the text and Century Bold for the titles. Bold horizontal stripes and captions in Italic compartmentalize the different articles throughout the tabloid. The design format of these newspapers is meant to reduce the layout task to a minimum without loss of aesthetics.
