Design: Vignelli exhibition, Rochester, NY. Book, Magazine, and Newspaper Design

The "Design: Vignelli" exhibition opened in 2010 at the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, which is also home to their entire professional archives. The exhibition mirrors the "Design: Vignelli" exhibition which toured nine countries between 1989-1993. As with the previous iteration, Lella Vignelli and Massimo Vignelli designed the displays, wrote the descriptive text, and curated the artifacts for the exhibition. The European journal, New York, 1978. This daily paper for the European community in the United States is a project that has not yet been realized (the only one included in this book). Structured with a section per page, it has typographical format similar to “The Herald,” though somewhat more dynamic. The typeface throughout is Century Expanded, with titles in Century Bold.

The Herald. New York, 1971. Newspaper design is one of the most neglected areas of visual communication. In 1971, when we were given the opportunity to design “The Herald,” a new weekly paper from the New York area, we were ready. Structured on a grid of six columns with sixteen modules per column, one typeface (Times Roman) throughout, one size for text, a few for titles, and italics for captions and decks, the paper was equipped for fast production —and indeed it was produced quickly! Every page or two constituted a section of the whole paper, and al pages were structured in clear horizontal bands, giving them a strong, easy-to-read look. Two tabloids were contained inside. All titles were confined to one module space. Unfortunately, the paper folded due to distribution problems.
