Detail of mosaic flooring in the Hall of the Ambassadors

1st century AD

Quirinale Palace

Quirinale Palace
Rome, Italy

The floor shows a precious mosaic decoration with three squares that accommodate fifteen panels, inserted in frames adapted with stylized vegetal scrolls and floral elements in the central one and geometric and floral motifs on the sides. A lively representation with birds of water, air, some fish and two singular images of geese dragging chariots led by a goat and a bird. The mosaics, taken from Villa Adriana in Tivoli, were put in place in 1813 by Carlo Albacini who had them acquired to embellish the room set up for Napoleon.
