The female Karelian costume is distinguished by its vibrant accessories and patterns. Aprons are made from striped wool fabric with intricate embroidery, sometimes complemented by ribbons and decorations. Married women wear elaborate caps, often featuring goldwork or brass embroidery, while simpler versions like the ruppi-perze-sorokka are gathered at the back. Silk scarves, highly valued and usually imported, are worn over the shoulders or on the head, symbolizing wealth and status. The costumes also feature the iconic Rekko embroidery, which adorns the front of the chemise with intricate designs in colors like orange, blue, and yellow. Skirts are densely pleated or gathered, often with a braided ribbon at the waist and a colored stripe on the hem, adding to the overall richness of the Karelian attire.
