Nearly all the poem carvings are found in rooms assigned to Chinese men. Dormitories first used by women and then by Japanese and non-Chinese detainees contain far fewer poems but do have Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Punjabi inscriptions. Pencil inscriptions written during WWII by German and Japanese POWs are written on top of the paint.
