The National College was founded in April 1943 by a presidential decree, issued by Manuel Ávila Camacho, to research and promote scientific, philosophical, and literary culture. Its motto was "Freedom through knowledge." There were 15 founding members, including Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, José Vasconcelos, and Alfonso Reyes.
