Divine Spirit (Mt. Fuji)

横山大観1952

Yamatane Museum of Art

Yamatane Museum of Art
Tokyo , 日本

As indicated by the title, this is an image of Mt. Fuji at its most majestic and divine. Taikan painted more than a thousand images of Mt. Fuji over the course of his life. The series of Mt. Fuji works created by Taikan after the late 1930s and 1940s cannot be mentioned without recalling his support for the nationalist stance taken in those years. After World War II he was criticized, but judging from his comment, "In old books Mt. Fuji is called Divine Spirit. While this term refers to the soul, my view of Mt. Fuji is best expressed by these words," we can see the pure love of Mt. Fuji felt by this one artist. Taikan let this work be purchased at the time this museum was established, on the condition that "a museum is formed."
