This double portrait depicts on the left-hand side the pensive Chopin at the piano, while on the right, we see him in close contact with a woman, perhaps a student, George Sand herself, or her daughter. Weiss's idea of juxtaposing two portraits prompts one to reflect on the true role of women in the life of Chopin, an issue that certainly intrigued Young Poland artists steeped in the misogyny of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.
