Double Portrait of both Artists

Jean Baptiste de Champaigne, Nicolas de Plattemontagne1654

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Rotterdam, Netherlands

One of the special works from the museum's collection of French painting is this double portrait of two artist friends who have portrayed each other. The figure on the left has painted the one on the right and vice versa. It is a special mark of their friendship. The instrument in the centre symbolizes the harmony between the two of them, but also between nature and painting, which they aimed at in their work. The date when the portrait was made is noted on a piece of paper at the table's edge: the year 1654.
