Kalisz, Poland

This folk dowry chest, known as a "wianna," is made of wood and painted. The decoration covers the front surface and the side panels of the object. The chest is painted in a dark green color with multi-colored floral motifs. The lid is equipped with a lock, and the chest rests on four profiled legs. The decorative ornamentation differs from the local Kalisz patterns.
The chest was brought to South-Eastern Greater Poland after 1945, although the circumstances surrounding its arrival are unknown. The owner of the chest is not documented. It was referred to as "Kalisz" either by settlement or due to its new location with the resettlers. In the 1970s, it was still used in the villages of Plewnia and Gostyń as a piece of furniture for storing clothing.
