Down the Dr. Barbosa de Castro Street – formerly known as Calvário Street – and past the artistic school Árvore, there is the house where the 19th century novelist Almeida Garrett (1799-1854) lived. The house is identified by a commemorative plaque, which reads «House where João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida Garrett was born, on February 4th, 1799. Engraved in memory of the Great Poet by the City Council in 1864».
The isolation of a particular moment from this building’s timeline, where the private sphere merges with the collective heritage, recognizes the built environment of differentiated dwellings, carried out throughout the centuries, as a contribution to the identity texture of the city.
