John Jay Smith (1887-1955) was the son of Hamilton and Julia Brooks Smith. He studied medicine at Howard Medical School and established a practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His sister, Julia Hamilton Smith, described him as an avid reader, an athlete and, sincerely committed to his work of helping people. Though he faced discrimination, Smith was well-respected among his peers in the medical profession.
