Following an invitation from the 27th Bienal de São Paulo, in 2006, and as a continuation of the series Dibujando América, the artists undertook a new project of drawing and travel to the single point where the borders of Peru, Colombia and Brazil meet. The goal was to “draw Brazil,” yet in light of the size of the project and the many conjectures that arose based on this commission, the artists decided to seek for visible signs of Brazil along the route to the border. In this way, they sought to question a series of preconceived ideas concerning that foreign territory which is nonetheless present in what could be defined as one’s “own” geography – while still being, evidently, foreign. This series of drawings by Mantilla are part of the project Dibujando B…, through which the artists outlined the traces emanating from a Brazil that has never ceased being a big question.
