Inspired by Darwin, the Dutchman Eugène Dubois (1858 - 1940) went in search of ‘the missing link’, the evidence that the ape man had once existed. On Java he found a tooth, skullcap and thighbone that demonstrated a mix between apes and humans: the Java Man.
His findings remained scientifically controversial for a long time. Now it is clear that he had found the remains of a Homo erectus and not the intermediate form between an ape and a human. Therefore according to modern scientific insights humans did not evolve from apes but share a common ancestor with apes. This ancestor lived about ten million years ago in Africa.
