Known as the “Empress of Fashion” and “the Beautiful Duchess,” British socialite Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (1757–1806) is the subject of numerous paintings, drawings, and prints. The 1783 portrait by Gainsborough from which this print is taken, painted for the sitter’s mother, Georgiana, Countess Spencer (1734–1814), is now held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
