The symbol many Derby organisations have is the legendary mighty ‘Derby Ram’. In folklore there are tales of a huge ram. The tales eventually evolved into a song that was usually sung on New Year's Eve and was already commonplace by 1739, when the vicar of St. Alkmund's, Derby, wrote at the end of a letter to his son, 'And thus I conclude this long story; almost as long a tale as that of the Derby Ram.'
Derby is situated on the River Derwent, in the county of Derbyshire, in the East Midlands of the United Kingdom. The Romans established the town Derventio. Originally a market town the town gained city status in 1977. Derby contains the southern part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
