Dutch Banner

This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of Dutch immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
'We wanted to show how Dutch immigrants left the landscape of Holland to come to the landscape of Australia’, said Mrs Stein Nuus of the Ladies Club Hollandia.
This banner represents the fact that Dutch immigrants left the landscape of Holland to come to their new land, Australia, and depicts the landscapes and familiar symbols of both countries. The top half of the banner is about Holland. The motifs used are the tulip and the blue iris, the coat of arms of Holland, a pair of clogs and a windmill.
Across the centre of the banner are the words HOLLAND - AUSTRALIA, in yellow letters on a green background.
The bottom half of the banner is about Australia – the new land they have come to and includes the following Australian motifs/landscapes: yellow wattle sprig, Sturt Desert Pea, Uluru (Ayers Rock), a kangaroo, a boomerang and a koala. All motifs are glued onto a cream calico background. The tulip, iris and coat of arms are worked in cross stitch.
