Exeter, United Kingdom

Painted in the early 20th century by Albert Moulton Foweraker (1873-1942), this watercolour study depicts a landscape of a woodland glade scene, possibly in Carbis Bay near St Ives. A lone figure walks along a path in the centre of the image, framed by trees either side. Signed to the lower left and inscribed on the verso. The sheet is mounted.

Foweraker was a painter from Devon, having studied at Exeter Cathedral School and both Cavendish College and Christ’s College, Cambridge. In 1898 he took up art professionally and exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of British Artists. Foweraker was a prolific local artist, painting many landscapes and local scenes from Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, where he lived from the mid-1920s. He also curated an exhibition of works by modern painters at Exeter, which developed into the Devon and Cornwall Fine Art Society.
