This engraving is an impressive example of how quickly an artist reacted to the market and to changing public taste. The first version of the engraving evokes, with its figures dressed in teh fashion of the 16th century, the German past. Shortly thereafter, Wagner skillfully reworked the plate in part. The 1826 print is permeated with the spirit of the artist's time. A decorative bronze medaillon bearing a of the artist had been hung in 1826 over the door of the Dürer House; that was faithfully recorded by the engraver. The figures in the foreground received contemporary clothing instead of medieval costumes.
