The origins of the Skylark rocket lay with the leading research institutions of the day, including the Royal Society, Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, University College London and the Rocket Propulsion Establishment at Westcott in Buckinghamshire. Skylark first came to public attention in an article published in the journal Nature in 1956. Its flight programme began early in 1957.
